Without a location, it was impossible to identify the sitter in this tintype, who according to the writing above her head was Alma Sargent. Based on her tight-fitting bodice lined with buttons, Alma sat for this portrait in the mid to late 1880s.

It’s so interesting that many people, including friends and others on instagram, think Alma looks masculine. I don’t really see it. ha!

Block out everything but the face and look again. Regardless, though, I cringe at how horrible it must have been to create that wasp waist.

The face sports a 5 0clock shadow and if you look closely you can see the absence of breast’s where their are nipples like a man.
Perhaps transgender?
